Massage Therapy for Stress Relief


The word “stress” comes with a bad connotation, but it’s not always a bad thing.

Nerves before an important event /  the energy to jump and catch something / your quick reaction to an emergency….this “fight or flight” response (your adrenalin increasing your heart rate and cortisol increasing your blood sugar) takes energy away from your digestive system and your immune response. Which is a very useful thing….in small doses.

Sustained stress, however, can cause a huge number of problems, including; headaches, digestive issues, stomach upsets, high blood pressure and sleeplessness, to name a few. There is now an increasing body of research to indicate that stress place a key part in creating or worsening certain symptoms or diseases.

The Australian Psychological Association lists a number of symptoms which are associated with extended stress:

Behaviour: Angry outbursts, alcohol or drug abuse, change in eating patterns, social withdrawal.

Mood: Anxiety, irritability, anger, reduced motivation, lack of focus, restlessness, sadness or depression, low self esteem.

Physical: Chest pain, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, body aches and pains, poor sleep, upset stomach.

Research has proven that massage can: lower your blood pressure, lower your heart rate, relax your muscles, increase the production of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine (your “happy” chemicals), reduce cortisol and insulin (your “stress” hormones) ….so it should come as no surprise that even just 1 massage can help to overcome habitual as well as acute stress, by chemically creating a sense of calm and peace in your body. It’s not just fluff!
